Emiratis must vote to help empower the masses

Al Ain: Emiratis must come forward to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming Federal National Council (FNC) for the success of the process of empowerment, Dr Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Chairman of the National Election Committee (NEC), said.
Dr Gargash, who is also Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Federal National Council (FNC) Affairs, said voters have a critical role in the process that needs a wide participation.
Speaking in Al Ain at the Shamsa Bint Suhail Centre for Creative Women, Dr Gargash added that women are key partners in the development of society and must make use of the elections to emphasise their vital role.
Dr Gargash said the elections are the best way of supporting the political participation programme in the UAE.
The FNC elections are scheduled to be held on September 24.
"The participation of the Electoral College members in the elections is a national duty towards further empowering the Federal National Council," he said.
The expansion of the Electoral College this year, he noted, confirms the leadership's commitment to move forward and enhance the participation of citizens in the UAE's policy-making process.
The emirates, he said, have pursued an approach that enables women to play an active and essential role in the community. Women account for 46 per cent of the total members of the Electoral College.
"[The] broad participation of women in the elections is a must to consolidate their leading experiences and assert their vital role in serving the UAE society and the country," he said.
The first elections, held in 2006, were a successful experience and this year they have taken a giant leap forward in term of the size of the Electoral College , which has more than 130,000 members now, he said. The upcoming elections also represent the various sections of the UAE community, especially the youth, with 35 per cent of the members falling under the age of 30.
Dr Gargash said the leadership has given due prominence to the youth, placing great confidence in them.
"The younger generation [has] been invited to participate in the elections and fulfil their national duty, as they are our link to the future and essential elements in the sustainable progress and development of the UAE," he added.
Referring to the arrangements for the polls, he said: "With the Election Day approaching, the NEC is working diligently to complete all preparations and the electoral process itself in a manner consistent with the aspirations of the people and the leadership of the UAE."
